Asparagus grading technology
External quality
Our external quality system successfully detects and sorts misshapen and double products. Ellips also invented the asparagus ‘open head measurement’, to have more information on the freshness of the product. An extra camera and laser unit is capable of determining this more in detail. Another option Ellips can provide is the ‘hollow spear measurement’. This unit uses an extra camera and a special lighting box. The asparagus must be rotated under the camera while being measured.
Colour separation
The colour is highly representative of the quality of the asparagus. Our colour module can determine – based on live feedback from the cameras – the colour in order to grade the asparagus (for example, green, white and purple). Rust on the body or pink discoloration on the white asparagus head can also be detected. While rotating under the camera, consecutive images of the asparagus are combined. Ultrafine colour separations are obtained through our TrueSort™ intuitive software that enables operators to quickly create or modify colour spectra.
Size separation
Our size module determines length and diameter (with an accuracy of 0.1mm), curvature, flowering and skin irregularities or dirt sticking to the asparagus. In order to receive more accurate details the product is looked at from various angles. Therefore, the asparagus is rotated under the camera and 5 images are taken of each product.
Weight
The weight of every single asparagus can be measured on a cup system or roller system with built-in weighing system. Accurate weighing (+/- 1 gram) is possible, even at high speed (up to 10 cups/second). The system automatically takes into account factors such as temperature differences and dirt accumulation throughout the day.
